Samantha Box: Caribbean Dreams
Dates: October 11, 2024 – January 19, 2025
Location: Anna K. Meredith Gallery, Des Moines Art Center, 4700 Grand Avenue, Des Moines, IA 50312
Explore the profound narratives of diaspora and identity in Caribbean Dreams, the latest exhibition by Jamaica-born, New York-based photographer Samantha Box. This collection, developed over six years, delves into the dispersion of people from their homelands, reflecting Box’s own experiences as a person of Black, Jamaican, and South Asian Trinidadian heritage.
Featuring over 60 photographs and a mixed-media installation, the exhibition presents a dynamic montage of self-portraits, landscapes, and still-life images. Box’s work captures the fluidity of identity and culture, portraying objects and figures that transition between realities, times, and imagined landscapes. Her art challenges the myth of a Caribbean paradise, offering a nuanced perspective on the complexities of displacement and cultural preservation.
This exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue with essays by Mia Laufer, Dr. Orin Zahra, and Erica N. Cardwell, as well as a conversation between Box and renowned Dominican artist Firelei Báez.
Don’t miss this opportunity to engage with a compelling exploration of diaspora and identity. Caribbean Dreams is on view until January 19, 2025, at the Des Moines Art Center.
